Hijab – Islamic Clothing for Women

Hijab primarily refer to head covering, veil or modest religious dressing used by Muslim women. Hijab is an Arabic word which means a cover or a curtain. In present times the term reflects to an article of clothing used by women. The Quran has used this word to refer to a dividing curtain that provides privacy. The Holy Book taught Muslims to address the wives of the Holy Prophet (SAW) from behind a hijab, hence giving the term the status of a curtain or a divider. The concept of hijab as an article of clothing developed later through fiqh and hadith.

The Quran has used other words similar to hijab such as khimar and jilbab. Muslim women must not reveal their beauty in public and must dress up modestly. According to the Quran they must " draw their khimar over their bosoms " and keep themselves covered. The concept of wearing hijab however, has evolved with time, and its importance, style and use varies according to the cultural variations in different parts of the world. In some parts of the world hijab retains its religious importance while in others people have restricted the practice of wearing hijab to a few selected situations. For instance, Hijab is strictly required for women in public in Saudi Arabia, on the other hand, in Turkey and France it is banned in educational institutions.

Muslim women must wear loose dresses that cover their body completely so that they do not draw sexual attention. They must cover their heads with a scarf, khimar or shaylah. Many scholars differ on how much of the clothing is required to fulfill the needs of hijab. Some agree at covering all parts of the body including face, hands and feet, others allow women to expose their face and hands while keeping the rest of the body covered. The laws for hijab are flexible for young girls as in many regions that must practice wearing it from puberty onwards.

There are different styles of hijab. Differences mainly are due to the differences of region and culture. Muslim women in the subcontinent, India and Pakistan, wear Burqa which is a two piece veil consisting of a head covering and a gown. Burqa is primarily black in color but women use other colors to suit their taste and style. Women in that region also wear Niqaab – a veil covering head and face and falls down to bosom. Another kind of hijab is Abaya – an outer garment that covers women from head to toe and is usually made from black caftan. Abaya worn in the Persian Gulf region and the Middle East is often embroidered and bedazzled. Another two piece veil for women is Bushiyya – a well-fitting cap prepared from cotton with a tube-like scarf. Bukhnuk is another veil which is shaped like a raincoat but falls down to the bosom only. Its edges are often embroidered to look beautiful. Afghan Burqa covers women from head to toe and has a grille over the face to help women look through. Iranian traditional hijab is Chador – a large semicircle of full-length fabric to cover women from head to toe.

Like women, men are also advised to dress up modestly and keep their heads covered. Muslim men cover their heads with scarves or turbans. Kufiyya or Ghutra is one such checkered head scarf. Taqiyah a crochet cap is also worn by many Arab men.

Modern trends have changed the approach of many men and women towards Hijab . Men dress up modestly and a majority of them refuse from covering their heads except for prayer times. Many women have taken up more trendy ways of observing hijab. Some do not wear traditional robes but cover just their head and face with nicely printed Shayla or scarf , others enjoy wearing embroidered and beautifully designed Abaya to the traditional black robe.

Whether brands want to establish themselves as risk-taking and groundbreaking, or more proven with long-standing character, custom aligns exist with fashion designers and events whose personality reflect those same valued practices. New Year, New Trends in Color and Design

We're well into the new year, and the Chinese New Year has just kicked off as well. As the fashion world starts to look ahead to spring, they release their predictions and pronouncements for the trends of the upcoming year. 2014 will prove to be fast moving light-hearted and fun if these newly announced trends have anything to do with it.

Saturated colors, Rich Fabrics

What color are your walls? If they're beige, gray or white, this may be a good time to update your wall color. Rich, deeply decorated colors like navy and plum are the new look. In fact some designers consider Navy the new "neutral."

If having a navy wall or room makes you a little uncomfortable, start with one piece of furniture or a few fabric accents. If you have beige walls and a white sofa consider how rich plum colored pillows and a throw rug might give that room a nice color "pop." If you do not want to replace your sofa but you want that deep luxurious plum color, you could get a fabric furniture cover. This will allow you to change the color of the couch as trends change without having to spend a fortune.

New Takes on Classic Design

Floral patterns are back – but not your grandmothers florals! Bold and bright is what's "in" this year. Interpretations of floralpatterns are no exception. Mixing and matching bold pattern and bright florals will modernize your overall look.

When shopping for fabrics, consider rich luxurious textures. Corduroy, velvet and suede are sophisticated and durable. These rich fabrics will hold up to darker color schemes and make your room feel trendy, yet comfortable.

No More Matchy-Matchy

2014 is the year to take bigger design risks when decorating. You probably already know that like colors and hues work well even if the patterns differ. This year consumers have even more variety to choose from.

Consider bringing different colors, textures and finishes into your home. You will be surprised how fresh and lively your space will look as you push the boundaries of what you thought would look good together.

The Color Purple

This year's "Color of the Year" is Radiant Orchid – a vibrant purple with pink undertones. Purple is thought of as a healing color. It is also the color of wealth and royalty.

If choosing a deep plum or orchid color is not your " cup of tea ," then consider going to a lighter color, such as lavender, for your walls and use brighter shades of purple as an accent.

Sculptural Artwork

This year is all about textures and the art on your walls is no exception! Hanging sculpture is what's "hot" for 2014. Sculpture adds interest and dimension to your walls. Consider a range of materials: Metal, wood, horn, or even macrame or fabric.

If you do not feel particularly crafty, consider the many local independent artisans in your community. Attend some local arts and crafts shows and you'll discover a whole world of creativity. Maybe you'll even find that wall sculpture that makes your heart sing every time you look at it.

Fashion TV – What You Can Learn From Fashion Television

While I’m not a die-hard fan of any particular fashion TV show, I think there’s a lot you can learn from the various shows about fashion as well as those that feature fashion prominently in their story lines. While you may not agree with or like everything you see on them, fashion shows – like cooking shows – help broaden your understanding of the art, which in turn, helps you dress better.

Here’s a rundown of some of the most popular fashion TV shows (check your local listings for time and channel):

Project Runway

Project Runway is a reality show that pits aspiring fashion designers against other in a series of design challenges. The winner gets $100,000 to launch his first line, and builds name recognition and a following throughout the competition. Design contestants have had to do some crazy things over the years, like make apparel from grocery store items (remember Austin Scarlett’s beautiful corn husk dress?), design Wrestlemania costumes, work with couture prom gown clients, create cocktail apparel for their mothers, and more. Throw in a little back-stabbing, snarky comments, and down-to-the-deadline high drama, and it’s really easy to get addicted.

What you can learn: design terms, clothing elements, styling tips, and how to work on a budget.

What Not To Wear

In this recurring pauper-to-princess tale, badly-dressed clients are nominated for makeovers by friends and family. The hosts track down the client in a public place, embarrass the heck out of her, and promise to finance a clothing shopping spree IF she agrees to listen to their fashion advice. If she does, she’s given a head-to-toe makeover and then returned home beautifully dressed to the astonishment of those nominating friends and family. While I don’t always agree with the clothing advice given to the clients, I do like that they use men and women of all ages, shapes, and sizes to makeover. I also like when the clients realize that they CAN change their life by changing their clothes, because I’ve seen it with my own clients time and again.

What you can learn: how to dress various body shapes, how to dress for different occasions, and how to gain confidence through appropriate wardrobe choices.

The Rachel Zoe Project

Rachel Zoe is a celebrity stylist who dresses her famous clients for TV appearances, movie premieres, and red carpet events. While I don’t always agree with her choices – and am ASTOUNDED by how many of her clients allow her to dictate their public image by wearing whatever she tells them to* – I can’t help but be impressed by how hard this woman works. With her backstage access to designers, models, and celebrities, she knows entire collections, how to put clothing elements together, and perhaps most importantly, how to make high-level contacts and massage delicate egos to get what she wants.

What you can learn: designers, clothing and accessory terms, styling tips, and how to build a million-dollar Rolodex.

*Lana Turner knew exactly how high to cut the slits in her skirts so no cellulite showed. Marlene Dietrich brought her own lighting equipment to movie sets and dictated how she was to be lit. Audrey Hepburn insisted on Givenchy apparel both in films and for personal use, because she felt he alone best understood how to dress her. They would NEVER hand their public image over to someone else to manage.

Sex and the City

Perhaps the ultimate fashion TV [http://fashionforrealwomen.com/blog/articles/fashion-fun/celebrity-fashion/fashion-tv-what-you-can-learn-from-fashion-television/] show, “Sex and the City” follows the life of four friends who work, play, and date in New York City. On HBO from 1998-2004 (and currently in edited re-runs elsewhere), the show was groundbreaking for it subject matter, nudity, and fashion. Not only were Carrie Bradshaw’s clothes expensive, eclectic, and unlike anything else on TV, this show — like “The Nanny” – clearly demonstrated just how much our clothes reveal about who we are and where we come from: Carrie, the bohemian writer; Samantha, the creative, hot-shot publicist; Charlotte, the proper WASP princess, and Miranda, the no-nonsense lawyer. Regardless of where they went or what they wore, those personas were almost always reflected in their style of dress.

What you can learn: designers, styling tips, how to dress for different occasions and occupations, how to dress at different levels of society.

Ugly Betty

“Ugly Betty” follows the life of a sweet, smart, average-size, average-looking assistant from Queens who tries to fit into the reed-thin, high-glamour world of New York fashion. Betty’s clothes are appropriate for her position and budget, but they pale in comparison to her high-wattage, fashion-obsessed co-workers. Not surprisingly, the costumer behind “Ugly Betty,” Patricia Field, was also the mastermind behind “Sex and the City” and “The Devil Wears Prada,” so you see plenty of big designer, high priced clothes.

What you can learn: styling ideas, what to wear at different levels, what NOT to wear.

Mad Men

Set in New York in the early 1960’s, this style-savvy show offers some of the best period costumes on television. Great suits, pretty dresses, and carefully selected hats, gloves, and bags take me back to my childhood when taking pride in your appearance and dressing appropriately for every occasion were as important as working hard and minding your manners. Beautiful clothes, artful grooming, and lovely sets make this show a pleasure to watch.

What you can learn: occasion-appropriate attire, how to accessorize, historical costuming.

Now as I said, I don’t always agree with everything on every show, but they’re fun to watch if for no other reason than because fashion plays such a dominate roll. You can always find something to take away and use from each program.

High profile superstars and A-lists help of course and when such luminaries David Beckham, Jennifer Lopez (J-Lo) and Madonna to name just a few, are seen wearing these new fashion accessories their fans will eventually follow suit.

It's not just golfers who wear baseball caps nowdays either. Rappers like Eminem, Kanye West and Snoop Dogg have all made the peaked cap the must have accessory for the youth of today. This is a trend dating back to the 70's and the rise of the Sugarhill Gang and their classic Rapper's Delight.

However the growth of fashion hats is not just about the teen market. The Fedora and the Trilby Hat are also enjoying something of a renaissance. The Fedora has been around for over a hundred years and whilst Baseball Caps, Trapper Hats and Beanie hats have all evolved to reflect today's fashion, the Fedora still retains exactly the same classic style and shape as it always has.

The Trilby Hat too goes from strength to strength but again looking just the same as it has always done. Crooners like Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra bought the hat to the public psyche and Sean Conner, as James Bond, continued to raise its profile. Today many pop stars, male and female can often be found wearing this classic item of fashion.

There is even a 'Trilby Hat Tour' that golfers all over the world can join provided that course that they embrace this most stylish of accessories.

As fashion hats continue to become even more prominent, maybe it's time that you too, doffed your hat to this very modern trend!
