Becoming a Fashion Designer

It seems like everyone is jumping on the  designer  bandwagon these days. And why not? The  fashion  industry is sexy –  fashion  shows, parties, celebrities, recognition, and even fame go along with a career in  fashion .

Now herein lies the question: do you go to design school or go straight to starting a business? Not all  fashion   designers  go the traditional route to design school, instead drawing on an entrepreneurial spirit, some “ designers ” turn their head for business into a thriving  fashion  enterprise.

Ralph Lauren is an example of a  fashion   designer  who bypassed the sewing machine and headed straight for the marketplace. Which path you take depends on your personal motivation. If you love sewing and pattern making, the traditional route is going to bring the most satisfaction. If you love the  fashion  world but don’t have the patience for needle and thread, a career in the fast-paced and exciting  fashion  biz is still possible … read on.

So you want to go out on your own, what’s first?

You’ve always admired  fashion   designers  and their ability to design trendy, unique and wearable  fashions  season after season, as if by magic. But it’s not magic; it’s a business. And to succeed in business, nobody is an island (meaning that everyone needs a little help to accomplish his or her dreams). And it’s not all glitz and glamour. Being a  fashion   designer  means you have to actually run a business.

Before you print up those business cards, ask yourself if you’re prepared to roll up your sleeves and tackle the not-so fun aspects of  fashion .

At first, running a  fashion  business could mean fulfilling orders yourself (i.e., packing boxes until the wee hours of the morning), steaming clothes repeatedly during  fashion  shows, and bookkeeping. You could spend only a small percentage of your time actually designing; instead you’re networking, schmoozing and negotiating with suppliers and vendors.

If you’re planning to take the direct-to-consumer path, you’ll have to create a website and maintain it (and most likely have to pay someone to handle these tasks), get a merchant account to process credit card transactions and manage charge back cycles. If you’re not interested in learning what these things mean, then you may decide to work for a large  fashion  house to learn the ropes.

But if you have the endurance and enough friends with skills or services you can trade for, you could go out on your own and succeed. Today is the age of entrepreneurship, why shouldn’t you get a piece of the pie?

The  fashion  biz: a reality check

Exciting industries are rife with competition-some that will fade away and others that will give you a run for your money. You have to compete against the big names out there and trendy emerging  designers  fresh out of the best design schools or veterans of big  fashion  houses-not to mention all the celebrities popping up with their own labels.

Running your own  fashion  biz may require you to reach out to suppliers and potential customers all over the world, which means you better be organized. Are you prepared to coordinate the procurement of raw materials like fabric, trim and hardware, so that your manufacturer gets what they need at the right time to deliver a finished product on deadline?

Think of yourself as a business person first and a  fashion   designer  second. If your  fashion  business fails, you’re the one that suffers. Always keep the business aspect in the forefront of your mind. Some people find this prospect exhilarating, while others can’t think of anything more horrifying. Still interested in starting your own  fashion  business?

I’m not a  designer , can I still work in the  fashion  industry?

Yes … and no. If you have the design vision, you can pay people to take your idea and turn it into a tangible pattern or design. This is sort of like what a creative director does. If this fits your situation, then you’d better have the business chops to get your business off the ground and you’d better have a solid Core Value Proposition.

What this means is that you must have a strong business proposal and offer a product that’s valuable and in demand. That doesn’t mean you have to sell high-end couture clothing to rich people. Clothiers H&M and Zara focus on fast ready-to-wear  fashion  at affordable pricepoints.

There is more than one path to becoming a  fashion   designer . You can learn to sew and go to design school to learn the ins-and-outs of the business. But not everyone learns to draw patterns and stitch together garments. The keys to succeeding in the  fashion  business are creativity, a good business sense and determination.

Stay tuned for more advice on becoming a  fashion   designer .

Award Ceremony Outfit Ideas

It is not only actors and musicians who get to attend awards ceremonies. Fair enough, they get to attend the year’s most talked about events in the entertainment industry, but there are plenty more ceremonies attended by the likes of you, me and other non-celebrities.

Whether it is a ceremony to award your company’s employees of the year, or an industry awards ceremony in which your business is up for a prize, most of us will attend at least one awards night in our lives.

Although not quite as glamorous as the Oscars, the larger part of awards ceremonies are flashy occasions, to which people are expected to arrive in formal dress. They are often held in hotel conference suites, historical venues or restaurants. This means they are never cheap to attend.

Included in the price of a ticket at most ceremonies you will get a meal, a set amount of drinks, and entertainment such as live music and a late night disco.

So what does one wear to such a special occasion?

Women’s Formal Dress Ideas

Women should seek inspiration from what has been spotted on the red carpet, but by all means should not feel obliged to follow suit. Celebrities get designer outfits thrown at them for free because there is no better publicity than a star papped in your gown at one of the year’s biggest events. But for those of us with lower incomes, designer outfits are often out of reach.

Mid-end designer clothing can be bought at discount retailers both on the high street and online but they cannot be depended on to have the right sizes. Your best bet is to traipse around the shops for a few days.

Some of the most noticeable award ceremony outfits over the years have featured quirky design elements like feathers and semi-precious jewels. Look for sleeveless dresses with an embellished corset to imitate the look. Alternatively, the skirt of the dress could be adorned with accessories.

Favourite colours are reds, blues and the classic black. White is also quite big but is not the most practical choice if the event involves food and drinks.

If you choose a dress with a lot of bling, team it with simple shoes. Patent leather heels are a popular choice. Alternatively, if you have opted for a simple dress, jazz it up with sparkly or embellished shoes.

Men’s Formal Dress Ideas

Most women love a man in a suit, and dinner suits a la James Bond are often the preferred style. Awards ceremonies are a great reason to invest in a timeless classic. Tuxedos and smoking jackets are also favourites.

Celebrities tend to experiment with trouser and jacket shapes and fabrics. A trendy, contemporary style is the drop crotch formal trouser that is young and cool.

Modern mens blazers come in a range of fabrics. Look out for ones with a bit of shine, or contrasting lapels for an easy way to update a classic look.

If you are adventurous, choose trousers and a jacket in different colours like black and dark red.

Go all out by choosing a jacket with a front chest pocket that you can adorn with a folded handkerchief in a vibrant tone to brighten up your dark attire.

Substitute your tie for a bow tie that will look very impressive in most formal settings.

Shoes should always be leather. Patent is a great formal look.

All About Hat Designs & Fashion

Hat design is a lot more complicated than it looks. It requires three dimensional process, more like building a sculpture than most fashion design. When designing a hat for mass production, it’s common to make a pre-production sample. This proto-hat can then be modified to the designers wishes and to accommodate the needs of manufacturing.

Considerations that a designer pays attention to when figuring out how to make a new hat style are buyer appeal, the practical wearability of the design, and how much the finished hat will cost. A work of art is of no use to a hat manufacturer if it is expensive to produce or uncomfortable to wear. The specific requirements a designer will have to consider vary depending on the audience the hat is to be marketed to. Each different marketing group has its own preferences as far as price and style. A successful designer will be familiar with many groups and know how to make a hat that will please them.

There are several steps to the production of a hat, once the design has been finalized. Just what happens to any given hat will depend on the kind of production that it is intended for. There are designer hats, made in limited runs, factory hats, which most of us wear, and examples of model millinery. This last one is the creation of a single design that will not be duplicated.

It’s possible for the designer to be more creative when designing a model hat. Designer hats and factory hats both need to be easily reproducible. Designer hats, however, can be hand sewn and made, allowing more flexibility of design. This is because people who buy designer hats are more willing to pay for the time that these methods of construction require. Factory hats must be able to be constructed on machines, quickly and easily. This means that they are often made with lower quality materials and construction than designer and model hats. It also makes them more affordable.

The average person is more likely to own a factory manufactured hat than a couture design of either kind, even the designer hats which are produced in limited lots. They are often worn for special occasions, or are casual hats, like the baseball cap. These hats are usually bought for their look rather than for quality, and designers must pay attention to this and keep the price low. However, too much loss of quality in production will result in a shoddy hat, which could also affect sales. For all these reasons, hat design is a complicated skill, which requires a lot of attention and training.

Gianni Versace: A Fashion Success!

Gianni Versace was born in 1946 in Reggio, Calabria, in Southern Italy. Versace received his love of  fashion  and first lessons on  dress-making  from his mother.

Initially Versace trained as an architect, but soon he followed his mother into the  fashion  business. Versace worked for a number of top Italian  fashion  houses, but in 1978 with the help of his brother Santo he launched his own label.

Versace was a great  fashion  pioneer who combined the worlds of high style and pop culture. He was a charismatic and accomplished  designer  of clothing and theater costumes.

Versace appreciated a range of historic attire which he incorporated into his designs and he was greatly influenced by Andy Warhol and modern abstract art.

Wowzer! Best describes the  fashions  designed by Gianni Versace. He was notorious for designing garments that would shock and startle our senses. Versace saw his designing as an art form. He initiated clothing that was visually excessive and provocative-  fashions  that confronted accepted codes of taste, beauty and sexuality.

Fashion  became entertainment, to be watched and admired – not simply worn. For Versace nothing was too extravagant too crazy or too risque. Yet no matter how extravagant or provocative Versace’s clothes were always strikingly well designed garments designed to flatter the body.

Versace was the  designer  of choice for many of the rich and famous: pop stars such as Elton John, and Madonna; film stars such as Will Smith, and Elizabeth Hurley and even royalty – Princess Diana.

The wealthy were drawn to his clothes like magnets, and that enhanced his reputation. However, Vercasse did not design simply for the wealthy his clothes were very much available to the average person.

In 1985 he launched the Istante label in 1985; and after years as Gianni’s muse, his sister Donatella became his co-designer and launched the Versace diffusion range, Versus, in 1989.

These labels featured clothes within the budgets of many consumers; not only were they priced lower than the custom-made clothes, but they were also aimed at younger markets.

In 1988 Versace received the Cutty Sark  Award  as “the most innovative and creative  designer  in the world”; and in 1993 the Council of  Fashion   Designers  of America  awarded  him the American  fashion  Oscar.

On July 15, 1997 Versace was shot to death outside his South Beach home in Miami, Florida by a crazed gunman name Andrew Cunanan. Since his untimely death in 1997 the Versace fashion house continues to grow under the creative leadership of his sister Donatella and the business acumen of his brother Santo. Donatella’s daughter Allegra inherited 50% of the company last summer when she turned 18. However, Donatella is still very much in charge.

The days of the wet-look, shocking pink PVC and as much flash and flesh as a catwalk can take are long gone. The new Versace is growing up. “I’m not blind,” says Donatella. “I know that most women don’t look like models.

We had to start addressing other parts of a woman’s life. The fashion business is a very different place from when Gianni started the label.” Donatella’s mind is very much on the continued success of Versace.

With Donatella at the helm, and Santo and Allegra at her side, they continue to grow and develop the Versace Product Lines with amazing designs unveiled for the 2005 Spring Season. The proof is in the Versace spring fashion line – Have a look for yourself!

Cycle of Fashion Trend

It’s a fashionista’s worst experience, even worse than looking oversize buddy, more degrading than wearing the same dress in another party — it’s the fear of symbolizing looking yesteryear fashion trend model.

Sometimes, fashion trends is considered as fads, are disreputably erratic. The fashion industry players are always on the quest to bring up something “NEW” & “HOT”.

What is Fashion Trend?

Trend is the lead in which something new evolving, mostly leaning, penchant and line of growth. Hence, fashion trend is the latest evolvement of the fashion industry.

What is Fashion Trend Really About?

Your closet can give the answer. If you don’t want to look at it, well.well. this resembles that you are matching your steps with the latest fashion trends. What it’s relation to fashion? People stick rigidly to the rules – okay, maybe not ‘YOU’. You may be one of those who walk their own way and dress as they like. When it comes to the fashion industry, it’s a continuously changing world. Even though some trends are considered as ludicrous and outdated, many other comebacks with innovative ideas.

Pace and Re-emergence of Latest Fashion Trends

Now its new millennium, but most of fashion things like the pegged pant legs, jelly bracelets, and finally the denim jeans, seem to be returning in trends again. It comes out that the latest fashion trends are simply have nothing new at all. Almost everything re-emerged in fashion trend. You can virtually find torn jeans in every clothing retail store.

Who decides What’s ‘Hot’ and ‘Not’ in Fashion Trends

There is no existence of specific group who declares what is hot fashion trend or not. In fact, the fashion designers and consumers who buys-out the fashion merchandise make their judgment and throw several opinions out there and observe what is grabbed.

Basically, ‘WE’, the consumer decide which merchandise is hot by making our minds what to purchase and wear.

The Fashion Trend Cycle

First part of the cycle, where the trend is highly hunted immediately after seeing that great fashionable hat, dress or shoe on the runway, red carpet or music video. Next, comes the emulation phase, where everyone wants a piece of the trend. Only big shots, celebrities and fashion industry players have approach to latest fashion right off the runway, which yet not showed up in retail stores.

During second phase, this newbie will appear in news papers, fashion magazines, TV and internet. At last, the trend will be soaked in the market, commonly at bit lower cost.

In the second phase new merchandise is available in bit expensive designer collections. It is only the third phase, where the merchandise is available to the mass market at affordable cost for most buyers.

The major part of over all mass will purchase it somewhere between second and third phase.

Before two or three decades it might have taken a some rears to make it from runway to mass market, however, nowadays producers have put the fashion cycle into rapid speed. Now, a hot trend often makes it appearance in low cost or discount retail store in as little as a few days or months.

In & Out of Fashion Trend

Reasonably priced fashionable clothing is a double-edged sword that make possible to buy fashionable looks at real-life budgets, at the same time leads to abolish the trend rapidly. However, when the market is completely saturated with a same monotonous trend it loses its appeal.

So how we can assume that how long a fashion trend will last? Let us find out:

Generally, most fashion trends last nearly one year, but some trends, usually the acceptable, last much longer. It is considered that normally fashion trends re-emerge nearly every twenty years. Hence, the minis skirts of the 80s are back in trends again.

The key to assume that how long a trend will last depends on from when you bought the collection. If you bought when the knock-off or discounts are going at retail store, then the count for the trend last not more one or two seasons. Fashion industry normally dumps together two seasons together, Spring and Summer, Fall and Winter, which provides you about six months to wear before it seems looks outdated.

In fact it is not specified that how long a fashion trend will last, you can put money on the just fads such as jeans, Uggs, hats etc… It doesn’t signify that you might not get fun in purchasing them. They are the evergreen items you would like to purchase any time.

Purchasing power can keep a trend on oxygen. In some cases people love particular trends so much they wouldn’t let it die.

The safeguard against rapidly changing fashion trends is to have a clothing line stocked with more traditional looks: T-shirts, jeans, and black dresses.

Finding the right clothing requires looking the right size, colour, and material to match. This could be a daunting task unless you have time on your hands. What often attracts attention in women’s clothing is not the  fashion  but the uniqueness in style and design. Black and white stripes seem to be a favourite in a number of prints, swimwear, and  dresses . Denim handbags and shoes are also available in a number of styles and designs.

For the ultimate in elegance, opt for a blouse with an airy woven weave, with lace sleeves for a Victorian touch. In summer, choose lighter shades so keep you looking cool and comfortable. Leave the darker tones for winter. Natural fabrics are also ideal for summer, so don’t hesitate to buy a few cotton tops, trousers, and  dresses . Skirts are ideal no matter what shape your body is as long as you remember that the width is never more than the skirt’s height.

The choice in women’s clothing is endless. Thanks to a growing number of online stores, the choice just got bigger. No matter where you buy women’s clothing from, it is worth doing some window-shopping in online stores too.
